The Blas de Lezo Exhibition the value of half-man in the Naval Museum of Madrid

Blas de Lezo He was one of the most important sailors in Spanish naval history and is considered a living legend for his naval exploits, his participation in key episodes of the European 18th century, his courage in combat, his unwavering convictions, his honesty in the defense of interests of Spain and its illustrated education. And now we can all know more about its history in addition to participating in children's workshops in the Exhibition called Blas de Lezo, the value of Halfman which has recently started in the Naval Museum of Madrid and that can be seen until January 13, 2014 at the usual museum hours, from Tuesday to Sunday, from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.

I really liked the presentation that the exhibition made Mariela Beltrán in an important means of communication so I was encouraged to publish the information of the call in which there is also space for children. And is that the September 28-29, 2013From 11:00 to 13:00, children's workshops are held in which children between 8 and 12 years old can participate and in which the Naval Museum intends to publicize and bring the history of Blas de Lezo to the world of children through the realization of didactic activities that stimulate your imagination. I hope the exhibition is a success and there are many more workshops and activities for kids.

The exhibition is very rigorous and is based on original documentary sources, some unpublished, consulted in four of the main Spanish archives: General Archive of the Indies, National Historical Archive, General Archive of Simancas and Archive of the Naval Museum, in addition to the General Archive of Colombia . Among the documents that are exposed there is a manuscript of the Naval Museum Library dated in 1733, of great importance to know the naval construction at the time of Blas de Lezo, and autograph newspaper of the lieutenant general in which he recounts the defense of Cartagena de Indias.

For those who want to read a version of who Blas de Lezo was in the style of Arturo Pérez-Reverte, the one you read, you want to get on the stick to put the flag of Spain even if the enemy is bombing you, I leave a link to end of article Here I also include a lighter version although it is full of epic, bravery, courage and patriotism.

Blas de Lezo was undefeated in all battles in which he participated, he entered the Navy with 15 years and soon stood out for its value. At 23 he got the job of a ship captain. At 25 he was lame, one-eyed and manco for wounds received in combat and that's why he receives the middle man nickname. Blas de Lezo fought in the Mediterranean next to the future King Carlos III, in the Pacific against the English and Dutch privateers and in America to defend the conquered Spanish territories.

His greatest feat was that in 1741, with only 6 ships and 2,800 men, defends Cartagena de Indias facing the second most important fleet in history, formed by 180 ships and 23,600 English soldiers. He managed to lead England's greatest naval defeat in its long and abundant history and prevented Spain from losing the square considered strategically as the key to America. In Cartagena de Indias they remember him as a hero and have a statue erected in his honor.

The combat was too much for him and apparently he died ill in 1741 as a result of the many sufferings and wounds of the siege. King Felipe V did it marquis posthumously although initially the viceroy Sebastián Eslava maneuvered before the Court to try to claim the glory instead of the brave seaman but as Blas de Lezo left it all written, thanks to this we know that the merits and honors of victory correspond to him. He was buried in 1741 in some Church around Cartagena de Indias although later works in these enclosures make it impossible to find the body. Currently the Spanish Navy honors its memory with the name of a ship the frigate F-103.

The exhibition also explains how the military architecture of the Colombian square could be rebuilt with the orography and flora that existed in the 18th century. As you can see in the video, the infographic design draws the topography and historical bathymetry of the bay from the maps and plans of Juan de Herrera and Sotomayor from the year 1731. An extraordinary recording that makes the defense's merit even more relevant from Blas de Lezo.

I recommend visiting the exhibition and I put it on the agenda to visit as soon as possible.
