"The scientific debate on children's sleep", poster at the Madrid Lactation Congress

Last weekend, the VII Spanish Breastfeeding Congress took place in Madrid and was presented in format Poster communication "The scientific debate on children's sleep" of doctors María Berrozpe and Gemma Herranz, of whom we have already spoken to you in Babies and more.

The poster format should collect the information in a very concise manner and I loved the way it was presented because it sums up very well the two currents that currently debate around children's sleep.

On the one hand there are a current that is based on the evidence. The conclusions would be these: it is normal and healthy for babies and children to wake up at night and claim to be accompanied. The variation in sleep patterns is huge and it is almost impossible to define "normal sleep" in infants. Attention to awakenings is essential to maintain nighttime breastfeeding, which, by the very nature of the breastfeeding process, is indisputable to maintain production and that the child receives the amount of milk required.

On the other hand there are a cultural current without a scientific basis that insists that the baby should not fall asleep to the breast, should not wake up at night and, if he did, should sleep alone again and without needing the parents. If these conditions are not met, it is a case of childhood insomnia due to incorrect habits and the treatment should be to let the child cry until he falls asleep alone. This current impairs breastfeeding because it intends to eliminate nighttime shots and does not allow the baby to fall asleep while nursing.

He Poster "The scientific debate on children's sleep" and the previous research that supports it, according to Dr. Berrozpe, has an extraordinary reception in the Congress of Breastfeeding by the most renowned professionals of Spanish pediatrics and in the previous link you can download it if you want to share it or print it.
