Honey, better than cough drugs

If for something the wise moms give a glass of milk with honey to their children before going to bed when they are ill. A study has just been published in the 'Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine' magazine, which ensures that Honey is the best cough remedy.

It is known by all that cough is a symptom of the most frequent in children, especially at this time of year, since it is produced by many different pathologies, and also has a difficult solution. There are few cough medicines, and there are not very effective. The most used drug is dextromethorphan, although its effectiveness is not very proven. We often despair looking for an effective remedy. Many grandmothers advise putting an onion on the bedside table, and some say it works, you will have to try.

In this work done by doctors from the University of Pennsylvania, children aged 2 to 18 years with catarrhal symptoms and of course, cough were included. They were divided into three random groups; one was given a hot drink with honey, others dextromethorphan and others a placebo (substance without any efficacy), 30 minutes before bedtime. Children who drank honey had less cough at night, was less annoying, and could sleep more.

This result could be explained by the antioxidant and antimicrobial effect of honey, especially in that it is darker, which was the one used in the study. Also for the increase in salivation that all sweet substances produce.

The study concludes that "Honey can be a safe alternative for children over one year." Even so, more studies with other types of honey would be needed to know if these results could always be like that.
