Pregnancies at an advanced age, more and more

Undoubtedly during these last years, one could say that the laws of nature are being modified, and much of the blame is on scientific advances. We speak specifically of a phenomenon that is becoming more everyday every day and that, it seems, gynecologists do not see with good eyes, it is the "mothers-grandmothers".

Assisted reproduction has taken giant steps during the last decade, allowing what was hitherto unthinkable, pregnant women of advanced age. Only in the community of Jaén, the data reflect that every year there is an increase of 20% of women who become pregnant after 45 years of age. Comparing figures, in 2004 9 babies were born whose mothers were over 45 years old, the following year the figure rose to 11 and in 2006 it is indicated that the figure soared.

Of course, we can say that even 30 births is a very small number, but one thing to keep in mind is that it is already an exceptional fact that a woman shines at certain ages, especially when it comes to several. Moral approaches, some experts indicate that there is a great age difference that is not advisable, since when the child reaches adolescence, his mother will be at least 60 years old. More than one friend will ask, is she your grandmother? And it is very logical, wrinkles, gray hair and age ailments begin to be noticed in most cases. It should also be noted that psychologically or intellectually the difference is too overwhelming, being able to cause some traumas to the child, at least this is what some experts indicate that they disagree with the pregnancy at an advanced age.

Juan Torres, head of Gynecology at the Hospital de Jaén, tells us that a pregnancy at an advanced age always involves many more risks than when it occurs between the recommended ages, although this is not new. Among some of the added risks is gestational diabetes that can lead to a more lethal one caused by depletion of the pancreas and intolerance to blood glucose. As for the baby, statistically the dangers are potentially greater to suffer some type of chromosopathy and to all this it should be added that at the birth of the baby the risk of needing a cesarean section or the use of forceps or suckers is increased.

It is not possible to deny any woman her desire to procreate, but there are actions that give the impression of doing so, as indicated in the Ideal Digital article, the Andalusian Health Service backs up the files in which the applicant goes beyond 40 years and wishes to have a baby. This action in our opinion should not be effective, since they must take into account many aspects before proceeding to a refusal such as physical and psychic health or the chronological age of the body, etc.
