Have you recently checked your children's toenails?

When they are babies and we bathe them daily, we don't miss any detail of their little body. But when they grow up and are less manageable, when they learn (even in part) to bathe or dress alone, some parts of the body can go unnoticed. Some of those forgotten are the toenails of children.

These can have certain diseases such as psoriasis, fungi (such as mycosis) or hypertrophy, diseases that should not be missed. Therefore, you have to check children's fingernails often and not only taking advantage of the moment we cut them. Essential, for example, if they complain of pain in the fingers or notice any color change.

Along with these diseases, there may be other discomforts caused by a cut of the nail that ends up digging into the skin. It is very painful and we must try to separate the nail from the skin and trim as well as possible.

The General Council of Official Colleges of Podiatrists of Spain notes that only 30% of the population has ever visited a podiatry review. But don't stop doing it if you suspect that there is a problem with your child's nails or foot.

There are certain malformations in the foot that are more evident and we look very much at the way of walking of the little ones when they learn to take their first steps. This is also an important time to take care of the nails, since for the first time the foot is wrapped in a shoe and the toenails are no longer free to grow or the fingers to perspire, all of which can lead to some of the problems which we have noted above.

The winter is a critical period for the “despistes” since the foot is always covered, unlike when we walk on summer sandals. If children start to play sports or sweat their feet a lot, we must try to maintain proper hygiene and that the foot is not sweaty for a long time.

It is recommended to wear footwear that allows air circulation and that the foot can breathe, in addition to trying to alternate and ventilate the shoes regularly, both sports and common use, to avoid excess moisture.

In the pool, you also have to take care of the foot and nail contact with fungus and wear sandals, as well as dry your feet well after showering and before getting in.

Definitely, you have to be attentive to children's toenails, follow appropriate hygiene measures and do not let them go without reviewing too much time to prevent possible problems from getting worse.
