La Casa de la lactancia en Barcelona

Going around the Internet I find a photograph that catches my attention, and I discover a peculiar building and an interesting story, that of La Casa de la lactancia en Barcelona.

More specifically it was the Municipal Breastfeeding House or Maternitat, and it is on Gran Via 475 of the city. It receives its name because it was conceived and used as a place where nursing mothers offered their milk to the babies of others in exchange for remuneration.

In the photograph of the upper facade, which we can see in more detail here, the woman is seen breastfeeding a baby in front of a row of other babies waiting for their turn. By the way, the nurse is represented as a queen on her throne.

Between 1908 and 1913 this masterpiece of architecture was made, with a beautiful facade, with the characteristic modernist style present in its forge and its ceramics, its signs, its sculptures and its ornaments ...

It was initially projected in 1907 by Pere Falcara, although the building is the work of the 1908 project, finished in 1913, by Antoni Helecho, and is part of several interesting building guides within Barcelona's Modernism.

Nowadays La Casa de la lactancia en Barcelona It no longer cares for babies but moves to the other end of our life cycle: it is a nursing home. And it is still a building that attracts the attention of pedestrians, and curious people in the history of breastfeeding.
